The disbelievers from the People of the Book and the polytheists were not going to desist ˹from disbelief˺ until the clear proof came to them:

Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief]1 until there came to them clear evidence

a messenger from Allah, reciting scrolls of ˹utmost˺ purity,

A Messenger from Allah, reciting purified1 scriptures
— Saheeh International
containing upright commandments.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Within which are correct writings [i.e., rulings and laws].

It was not until this clear proof came to the People of the Book that they became divided ˹about his prophethood˺—

Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided1 until after there had come to them clear evidence.

even though they were only commanded to worship Allah ˹alone˺ with sincere devotion to Him in all uprightness, establish prayer, and pay alms-tax. That is the upright Way.

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakāh. And that is the correct religion.

Indeed, those who disbelieve from the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the Fire of Hell, to stay there forever. They are the worst of ˹all˺ beings.

Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.

Indeed, those who believe and do good—they are the best of ˹all˺ beings.

Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures.
— Saheeh International
Their reward with their Lord will be Gardens of Eternity, under which rivers flow, to stay there for ever and ever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. This is ˹only˺ for those in awe of their Lord.

Their reward with their Lord will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord.
