And remember the brother of ’Ȃd, when he warned his people, who inhabited the sand-hills1—there were certainly warners before and after him—˹saying,˺ “Worship none but Allah. I truly fear for you the torment of a tremendous day.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And mention, [O Muḥammad], the brother of ʿAad,1 when he warned his people in [the region of] al-Aḥqāf - and warners had already passed on before him and after him - [saying], "Do not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."2

They argued, “Have you come to turn us away from our gods? Bring us then whatever you threaten us with, if what you say is true.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

They said, "Have you come to delude us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful."

He responded, “The knowledge ˹of its time˺ is only with Allah. I only convey to you what I have been sent with. But I can see that you are a people acting ignorantly.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

He said, "Knowledge [of its time] is only with Allah, and I convey to you that with which I was sent; but I see you [to be] a people behaving ignorantly."

Then when they saw the torment as a ˹dense˺ cloud approaching their valleys, they said ˹happily˺, “This is a cloud bringing us rain.” ˹But Hûd replied,˺ “No, it is what you sought to hasten: a ˹fierce˺ wind carrying a painful punishment!”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient:1 a wind, within it a painful punishment,

It destroyed everything by the command of its Lord, leaving nothing visible except their ruins. This is how We reward the wicked people.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.

— Saheeh International

Indeed, We had established them1 in a way We have not established you ˹Meccans˺. And We gave them hearing, sight, and intellect. But neither their hearing, sight, nor intellect were of any benefit to them whatsoever, since they persisted in denying Allah’s signs. And ˹so˺ they were overwhelmed by what they used to ridicule.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And We had certainly established them in such as We have not established you, and We made for them hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]. But their hearing and vision and hearts availed them not from anything [of the punishment] when they were [continually] rejecting the signs of Allah; and they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

— Saheeh International

We certainly destroyed the societies around you after having varied the signs so perhaps they would return ˹to the Right Path˺.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And We have already destroyed what surrounds you of [those] cities, and We have diversified the signs [or verses] that perhaps they might return [from disbelief].

Why then did those ˹idols˺ they took as gods—hoping to get closer ˹to Him˺—not come to their aid? Instead, they failed them. That is ˹the result of˺ their lies and their fabrications.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Then why did those they took besides Allah as deities by which to approach [Him]1 not aid them? But they had strayed [i.e., departed] from them. And that was their falsehood and what they were inventing.
